The Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya was established in 1938. The Board commenced to issue currency in 1939 to replace the Strait Settlement currency. All the notes issued by the Board bore the portrait of King George VI (1936-1952). These paper money were issued in denominations in Cents and Dollars. During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the Japanese introduced its own currency. The currency was fix at 1 Japanese Yen = 1 Malayan dollars. However, after the British regained their status in Malaya States, the Japanese occupation currency was declared worthless and the Malayan dollars was reinstated its value relative to sterling. There were two types of Malayan currency issued by the Board in different dates. One was issued in 1940 with the denominations in 10 cents, 25 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars and 10 dollars. Due to the war in Europe, these notes were barely circulated in Malaya States. Another type of note was issued in 1941 and 1942 with the denominations in 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars, 1000 dollars and 10000 dollars. Eventhough they were printed in 1941 and 1942, these notes were only been issued in 1945 after the British had regained their control in the States.
